Explore Intarsia Knitting with Sylvia Watts Cherry
Saturday 29th 10.30-13.00
Di Gilpin Wool Hoose
Join Sylvia Watts Cherry, Queen of Intarsia, to explore the technique using stocking stitch and other stitches, including garter, cable, and intarsia cast-on and bind-off.
You will need to be able to bind off, knit, purl and understand basic cable instructions. Some experience with using charts, basic intarsia and cable knitting will be helpful.
Participants will need to bring min. 4 colours of 4ply or DK yarn (20g each), gauge size needles, ruler, pencil, tapestry needle, cable needle and scissors.

St Monans 1875 Memorial Talk - why now?

A dramatic memorial has just been unveiled to commemorate the lives of those lost in the fishing disaster of 1875 which so affected this area of the East Neuk: Five local fishing boats were sunk during a storm of the coast of Norfolk while they were returning home following the East Anglian herring season. Come and hear from members of the group who have driven the campaign and why it has been so important for this community.

Join Tania of TJFrog to make contemporary basketweave Dorset Buttons. With basketweave being one of the seeding patterns used in Gansey knitting and the Gansey knitting connection here on the East Coast of Fife, it seems fitting to explore this traditional stitch of the heritage craft of Dorset Buttons. Try out this stitch using different colours and weights of yarn to make beautiful buttons for your hand knits.

Meet with artist Beverley Carruthers at her new sound installation at The Scottish Fisheries Museum as she speaks about her project, the legacy of the Herring Girls. She will explore further her inspiration from oral histories in speaking to the last generation of these migrant workers, and how ganseys and walking songs have influenced what you see in the artwork.
Entry to the museum is included in this ticket and goes towards supporting the artist attending this weekend.

Designer Insights Talk with Susan Crawford: Vintage Inspirations

In 2012 Susan embarked upon her biggest research project in conjunction with the Shetland Museum, and found herself going in search of missing links hidden between the stitches, and knitted into the fabrics of the vintage textiles housed in the museum archive.
In this talk, Susan will take you on that search with her, revealing the incredible stories she found interwoven with these beautiful historical knits.

How has the construction and pattern history of this garment been used in couture and why is it on the Red Endangered Crafts List? How have Di and Sheila reinterpreted historic practices in their popular Sourcebook?
This will be followed by an exclusive social in the neighbouring Bothy (NB stairs to first floor) for tapas, wine and non-alcoholic refreshments, with plenty of time for mingling.

Introduction to Fair Isle Knitting with Donna Smith

During this workshop you will be guided through the techniques used by Shetland knitters when knitting Fair Isle, you will be shown several examples of Shetland knitwear and swatches to illustrate each point. Topics covered will include knitting in the round, holding the yarn and choosing colours as well as many others. During the class you will knit a small Fair Isle wrist warmer using Shetland Yarn.
Materials included
Participants should bring needles in size 3, 3.25 or 3.5mm, either short or long DPNs or a circular needle long enough to do magic loop (suggested length 60 - 100cm).
Stitch markers and a tapestry needle might be useful but not essential.

Join the team from Bowbridge Alpacas as you use their spectacular, pure fibre to learn how to needle felt. You’ll learn the basics and then create your own fluffy alpaca to take home with you! No feeding or mucking out required.
This workshop is suitable for beginners or those wanting to develop their shaping skills. Come and enjoy this lovely craft with natural fleece.

Knitting Clouds with Intarsia, Duplicate Stitching (Swiss Darning) and cross hatching with Susan Crawford

Taking inspiration from Susan's popular design 'Clouds', she will take you through the process of knitting an intarsia swatch which you will then decorate with the delightful technique of duplicate stitching (also known as Swiss darning). To complete this painterly approach, Susan will introduce you to her method of embroidered 'cross hatching' to the surface of your knitting.
By the end of the workshop you should be familiar with all the skills you need to knit not just the Clouds neckerchief but also designs such as Jackdaw from Susan's book, A Stitch in Time Volume 3 - The Colourwork Edition.

Tunisian Crochet with Samira Hill

Tunisian Crochet is a great technique that combines some elements of both knitting and crochet yet can end up looking completely different! In this workshop, Samira will teach you what Tunisian Crochet is and how it works, all the techniques and standard stitches, basic shaping techniques, how to read and follow a Tunisian Crochet pattern, and give you an overview of the range of fabric possibilities using Tunisian Crochet. No previous skills or experience in Tunisian crochet is required, some basic crochet skills can be helpful, but not necessary to attend this workshop.
Participants should bring
100g Aran / Worsted yarn in any shade (avoid dark colours)
5mm / 8 / H Tunisian crochet hook

Children’s Introduction to Knitting Sessions
At Kellie Castle Undercroft!

These accessible morning and afternoon sessions are designed to introduce children to the fun of yarn craft. Led by trained tutors specialising in working with children (members of the PVG Scheme of course) kids can learn about knitting, types of stitches and discovering a new interest.
£5 - All proceeds go to CHAS
Kellie Castle is a beautiful National Trust for Scotland property. It will be open all weekend 10-4, so come and learn about its striking history, book on a guided tour and enjoy the tea room!
Members of the East Central Scotland Guild of Weavers, Spinners and Dyers will also be at Kellie Castle - come and chat to them as they demonstrate their craft skills.
